One example that illustrates this idea is Chess, a board game where the player has 16 pieces at their disposal: eight pawns, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and a king and queen. The number of pieces is directly tied to the dimensions of the play space, or game board. A change in the number of spaces on the board would greatly impact the performance of certain pieces, such as knights, kings, pawns, and possibly bishops.

In RTS games like Company of Heroes 2, population or army caps serve a similar purpose. The carefully crafted experience for players is often dependent on these limits. For instance, if there were no limit to the number of units a player could have on the battlefield at any given time, it would greatly alter the dynamics of the game.
